FARM FOR IMPACT Progress From 5 Oct 2020 to 11 Jan 2021

The design is a success! Earlier this week, we celebrated the birth of our proprietary aquaponics system design at Kairos Agriculture in Permatang Pauh, marking the beginning of our FARM FOR IMPACT project. From the very beginning, both Kairos Agriculture and PWD Smart Farmability shared the same beliefs towards #agriculture; we must pivot into a new way of farming ethically and sustainably through #regenerative practices - to demonstrate that #FoodSecurity does not have to come at the expense of #PlanetaryHealth. The success of our FARM FOR IMPACT project shall become a strong proof-of-concept to showcase to the world a scalable business solution that generates income while being #SociallyResponsible to our poorer communities and minimizing the negative impact on our #environment. With the favour of the secretary general of World Humanitarian Drive (Malaysia chapter), Prof. Dato' Dr. GP Doraisamy - we are confident in meeting our #humanitarian and business goals to stamp a positive impact in this world. Through this FARM FOR IMPACT project, Kairos Agriculture and PWD Smart Farmability have committed to the production of 6000 #OrganicVegetableTerrariums by the end of year 2021. With the #pandemic showing no signs of slowing down, our advocacy of bringing nutritious food to the table in every home - rich or poor - is more important than ever. We want to take this opportunity to thank the team at Kairos Agriculture for having been a wonderful impact partner during this journey thus far - let's work diligently towards our mission, greater things are yet to come!

Recognizing #Penang’s Vision 2030 of making Penang a “Family-Focused, Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation” - #FarmForImpact is a collaborative effort between Kairos Agriculture and PwD Smart FarmAbility to drive #EthicalFarming models that positively impact the environment and communities in sustainable ways. As the world finds ways to mitigate the consequences of #COVID19, the marginalized and indigent communities are struggling with food and #NutritionInsecurity in the midst of the pandemic, being unable to compete with the rest of society for access to nutritious food that is affordable. Meanwhile, sitting on the border of Penanti Penang and Lunas Kedah, Kairos Agriculture is erecting a total of 14 rain shelters for farming across 4 acres of land, leased from Chief Minister Incorporated (“CMI”). The vanilla farm also teamed up with social enterprise PWD Smart Farmability to introduce the World’s First Organic Vegetable Terrarium to the Northern region. This groundbreaking innovation is designed to make fresh, organic, nutritious, and live, unrefrigerated vegetables available for all economic backgrounds, while raising awareness and conversations surrounding personal carbon footprint at household levels. “With the sudden halt of the global food chain, a global urgency to #decentralize food production, bringing food production as close to homes as possible, is more crucial than ever,” explains Dr. @Billy Tang, founder and CEO of PWD Smart Farmability, “We are talking about raising food & nutrition security and #CarbonSequestration at home, at all times, in urban areas where there is a scarcity of space.” “Thus, the only way forward is #RegenerativeAgriculture that renews #SoilEcosystems and combat #ClimateChange - and we are thrilled to share many similarities of these same values with Kairos Agriculture.” Dr. Billy Tang adds. In line with Kairos Agriculture’s vision to be a leading chemical-free integrated farm in Asia and its mission to encourage youths to participate in agriculture, Kairos Agriculture is dedicating 2000 sqft. of its farmland to scale up the production of these terrariums, through PWD Smart Farmability’s proprietary aquaponics and soil technology. “With this new facility, we aim to scale up the production to 500 terrariums per month to benefit communities with low food budgets,” says Ezra Tan, Managing Director of Kairos Agriculture, “this terrarium production hub will employ people with disabilities as an effort to demonstrate that anyone can contribute to #NationBuilding if given a chance.” The FARM FOR IMPACT project will also provide an excellent leverage for the development of #SocialEntrepreneurship programs for #PeopleWithDisabilities, and provide a hands-on learning environment for children and youths in school to inculcate in them #FoodLiteracy and interest in growing food ethically. The Memorandum Of Agreement signing ceremony between Kairos Agriculture and PWD Smart Farmability was officiated by Majlis Bandaraya Seberang Perai (MBSP) and witnessed by T.Y.T. Tun Dato’ Seri Utama (Dr.) Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Abbas and the Secretary General of World Humanitarian Drive - Prof. Dato' Dr. GP Doraisamy, who is also the Senior Board Advisor of PWD Smart Farmability. During the auspicious ceremony, Kairos Agriculture was also awarded ‘The Malaysia Book of Records’ Certificate in recognition as the First Smart Vanilla Farm in Malaysia.

How Are The Terrariums In The 3 Orang Asli Settlements Doing? Let's find out!

Last Sunday on 16th May 2021 - we paid a visit to the 3 Orang Asli settlements in Klang to follow up on the status of their terrariums, which were all sponsored by Goodnite Malaysia. Led by Vincent & Ham Ngap Shui, both volunteers who have been training the Orang Asli's and looking after the needs of their village, we went on to distribute 40 organic tilapia fishes to these families on top of food aid sponsored by our impact partner Daily Bread Food Bank and donated by the public. Volunteers Vincent & Ham have been diligently and consistently coaching each family and recipient of the terrarium on how to manage and troubleshoot their box - every bi-weekly, they will pay a visit to the beneficiaries to ensure that they are doing the right thing and following the proper care instructions. Out of the 32 terrariums deployed to these settlements, we managed to visit 23 of them since it's Hari Raya and some of the recipients have returned to their hometown and were unable to host our visit. Through #RegenerativeAgriculture principles, what we ultimately want to see is a proof-of-concept that #SoilHealth and agriculture can be strong factors in #PovertyAlleviation. Our terrarium serves as an introduction and awareness to soil health & zero-cost regeneration - showcasing to the poor community that you don't need special skills or financial capital to grow your own food. Vegetables can grow from thin air with the help of #NitrogenFixers in healthy soil, and ample sunlight being on the equator - to aid the poor, we don't need technology packages or fertilizer subsidies! As mentioned in our earliest posts - these Orang Asli people rely purely on the sea and fishing activities as a source of income. With the repeated MCO, their economic activities were forced to come to a stop. Vincent & Ham has been working hard to coach them with basic #SelfSufficiency skills so that we can deploy our satellite farm here to further #upskill this community. Watch this video blog on our journey, and discover the wonders of how soil health can #EndHunger among the marginalized communities and save the planet.
